7 Quick Takes Friday

Once again I'm joining Jen and friends in giving some snapshot thoughts. Rather late on Friday afternoon, but still Friday.

1. I went with Princess and the rest of the first and fifth grade classes to see Despereaux today. I have not read the book, but the movie was entertaining and charming. I don't know that will go down as a timeless movie, but it was fun. The teacher said the book is much better, of course. We walked from the school to the movie theater and back. It was about a mile walk, and the day was beautiful. The police were nice enough to come out and block traffic as we crossed the busy streets. I also walked to and from home and school. So I walked about 3.5 miles I think today.

2. I still need to buy one more Christmas present, before tomorrow. I kept forgetting to buy for this person until I was already checking out at the stores. I don't know when I'm going to get this present, but I'll find time somewhere.

3. Butterfly is about to have another tooth. It is just about to come through, and that makes me happy because it explains the extreme fussiness of the last couple of weeks. She is in much better spirits and we are all glad for that. A fussy baby is not fun for anyone. She also blows a lot of raspberries, which is very cute.

4. We might be crazy. We're discussing attempting to take the kids to Midnight Mass. Well, it actually starts at 11:00 p.m. We think the bigger kids will be great. We just don't know how Butterfly is going to do. Our other options are 4 and 6 p.m. I want to go at 6, but Husband rightly points out that parking would be a nightmare. We would have to get to church by 5:15 at the latest to have seats for our family. It is likely that the 4 o'clock Mass would be ending shortly before that time, meaning the parking lot would still be emptying when we get there. But going to Mass at 4 p.m. just doesn't feel like Christmas to me. So we are not sure what we are going to do.

5. My house is a disaster. I don't even know where to begin with cleaning. There is laundry piled up. There are dirty dishes. The boys' room is chaotic. I want a peaceful home before next week. So tomorrow morning will be spent cleaning I guess.

6. I've lost my cooking mojo. I just don't feel like planning and making meals. I don't know what I'm going to do about that, but it can't continue.

7. Target is already selling Valentine's Day clothing! Hello! Christmas is still to come. But I bought a shirt for myself anyway. It has lovebirds on it. They are purple. I like it very much.

Bun just had another tooth come through -- thank goodness for baby Tylenol!

And I spent my snow day today cleaning like crazy. But it's good because now my house is in order and I can concentrate on the last things I need to do before Christmas.

The Target selling Valentines shirts already is making me laugh...what is with rushing the holidays? Christmas before Halloween and now Valentines day before Christmas. Make them stop!

I think that there is just not enough time in the day around Christmas to also clean house. I give up!

I noticed Valentine decorations in stores today, too - at our Christian bookstore, of all places! They had removed most of their Christmas decor from the store window in order to make room for Valentine's. How ridiculous is that? But all that aside, I will have to go to Target and get that shirt you mentioned ;)

I used to feel the same way about the Christmas masses that you do until I tried the 4 p.m. mass three years ago when the kids were 5,2 & 1. It was perfect.

Kids had a chance to nap. Mass was just the right length. We were home in time for dinner and the kids got to bed at a descent hour. We got the presents out and were in bed before midnight.

We haven't turned back. I'm sure when they're teenagers we might go back to midnight but until then we're sticking with the early bird mass.

Give it a try.

We've been going to Midnight Mass with toddlers and babies for quite a few years now and have found that they usually sleep right through it all. Good Luck!
